It had been about 10 years since I was in high school and solving math problems on a regular basis. By drilling with the questions in this book, I improved my quantitative score on my first practice GRE from 590 to 750 on the actual test.

I am planning to take the GMAT so I bought this book to review before I start getting into quant on the GMAT. I never enjoyed math in high school (which was over 6 years ago), nor was it my best subject, and during college I only had to take one statistics class. When I sat down to review math I honestly didn’t even remember how to do long division without using a calculator, simply because I haven’t needed to do that for years!! I am halfway through this book now and it’s really helpful. It starts off easy and reviews all the basics, along with a refresher on all of the rules of math. I feel as though most review books assume you know the basics and just dive right in, so that’s why I like this book. The book gets progressively harder in each chapter, but it still ties in things you have just reviewed. I really like that each time the book introduces a new subject, it gives you 5-10 quick practice problems to do to make sure you understand it before moving on. There is a diagnostic test in the beginning of each chapter, as well as a longer review test at the end. I also like how this book isn’t very big, it’s not the same size as the giant standardized test books they make, so it’s not very indimidating. I can’t imagine a better way to relearn math: lots of easy-to-understand review and plenty of practice problems…Highly recommended!

This book is like a math dictionary, very thorough and covers all the confusing concepts of math. I found it so helpful that I decided to keep it indefinitely in case I ever have to look up something.

  4. Travelbugnats says:

I didn’t do much math in high school – switched to languages at a young age. Now I’m faced with the dreaded GRE. To make matters worse, I’ve only been given a month or so to learn everything I need to know. Admittedly, this is an impossible task, but this book is going a long way towards helping me understand concepts that I’ve never seen before. It is well-written, with loads of examples and exercises each step of the way. I have found, however, that every now and then a step seems to be missed in the examples. In these rare cases, you might need someone with a better grasp of math (i.e. anyone who actually took it in high school – not a math genius) to show you what is missing. Overall, highly recommend this book.

I bought this book along with the Kaplan books to study for the GRE after being out of college for 11 years. I was never good at math, and never liked it. With this book I had trememdous success teaching myself, and here’s the kicker – I even enjoyed it at times! For Amazon’s price of less than $6, it is absolutely invaluable. If it taught me only how to solve one type of word problem it would have been worth that much, but it taught me much, much more. Lots of practice problems and exercises. I did significantly better on the GRE than I EVER thought possible, and I attribute much of my success to this book and lots of study time! I’m going to keep it around for future reference, too! Highly recommended!
