A series of rhymes about animals introduces counting and grouping numbers, as well as examples of such behaviors as cooperation, friendship, and appreciation.
When we received this in the mail, my four year old wasn’t overly excited. I had heard good things about this author so I went ahead and pulled it out at bedtime. After two pages, he was asking for more and now it is one of his favorite books and his absolute favorite math book.
I used this to teach first grade students addition to 10. They liked the stories and the illustrations, and it brought a little variety into the classroom.
Math Fables by Greg Tang is a great book to help kids understand the quantative value of numbers as opposed to just the sequential place of numbers (i.e. 1,2,3,. . .). My 2 grandsons look at numbers differently now. This book took some of the mystery away – they get it. They understand that 5 is 5-ones, or can be 2 groupings of numbers such as 1 and 4, 2 and 3. . .1+4, 2+3. Since we use math everyday in numerous ways, it’s good to keep young minds open to explore numbers. Knowledge of how numbers work help to keep learning blocks at bay.
I purchased this book to give as a gift. I borrowed a copy from the library to see what I thought of it first and I believe it is a worthwhile purchase. The gentle rhymes present simple math concepts in an appealing way. Example: a group of 10 animals might be depicted in sets of 7 and 3, 5 and 5, and 8 and 2. I highly recommend it.

This is exactly what my 1st grader is learning in school. 3 and 7 makes 10, etc. Very cute and beautifully illustrated book.
