As a kid I had the worst time trying to learn my multiplication tables. My parents bought me records (45’s..remember them??!) with songs and tried quizzing me all day, especially in the car, to try and learn them. I especially hated those quizzes!
As a homeschool mom I wanted to teach my kids without stress. So here is what I did, my oldest learned his by the end of first grade:
Get this poster on the wall..just above eye level so they have to look away from their work to find an answer. The always have them do their work in front of the poster. Next, get a nice new tablet. Down one side write a bunch of problems, sticking to one set of the table..and DO NOT make it 1’s, 10’s, or 11’s tables. For example, I started my son at 8’s. I wrote all down one side of one page, 8 x 7 = : 8 x 5 = (Do not put their problems in order either, keep them out of order.
Then make a second or even a third page…all just the 8’s.
Now have your child do the pages, using the poster to find all answers they don’t know, which at first will be most of them.
Do not make them feel they can’t use the poster. The looking up and down will soon get them learning by visualization and recollection.
Don’t move on to another table (we did 7’s next, then 8’s, then 9’s…the hard ones…) until they totally know the first. Make some flashcards after a week or two, just on the 8’s. Slowly add new cards when they learn a new table.
That’s it! It works. No pressure, no stress, no tears.
